What Qualifications Do Children’s Dentists Have?

To become a pediatric or children’s dentist, an individual must complete college and dental school. Then, they must do a residency at a pediatric dentistry program. Finally, they have to complete a board exam, and once they pass that test and finish their residency, they qualify to get a pediatric dentistry license. Some children’s dentists also get additional certification through the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

At Nia Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, our children’s dentists have the experience and credentials you expect when bringing your child to the dentist. Take a look.

Dr. Farshid Nia, DMD, MSD

Dr. Nia has extensive experience in Orthodontics, children’s dentistry, general dentistry, and cosmetic dentistry. (Yes, he is an Orthodontist and a Pediatric Dentist!)  He was first in his class at Nova Southeastern University in Florida, where he earned a Doctorate in Dental Medicine. Then he earned a specialty certificate in orthodontics at the University of Colorado–School of Dental Medicine in Denver. He is professionally affiliated with the American Association of Orthodontics, the American Dental Association, the American Dental Education Association and the Georgia Dental Association.

Dr. Azi Nia, DMD

Dr. Azi received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and chemistry from Georgia State University. Then, she earned a Doctorate of Dental Medicine from the Medical College of Georgia, and finally, she completed a three-year residency at the Colorado Children’s Hospital to hone her skills in pediatrics. There, she was also a chief resident.

On top of her professional training, she is also certified by the Board of Pediatric Dentistry. This special certification means that she has experience providing top notch care for infants, toddlers, children, and teens as well as patients with special health care needs. To obtain that accreditation, she took a two-part exam and continually updates her knowledge with continuing development courses. She has professional affiliations with American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Dental Association, the Georgia Dental Association, the International Association for Dental Traumatology, and the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry.

Advantages of Working With a Children’s Dentist

When you take your child to a children’s dentist, you get to work with a professional who is trained to see and understand children’s unique needs. That can involve dealing with cavities in baby teeth, deciding when baby teeth need to be extracted to allow room for adult teeth to erupt, and even doing root canals in six year molars. Their special training also helps these professionals to spot the need for orthodontic treatment early in their patient’s life.

However, it’s not just the education and training that makes a difference. Pediatric dentists also have the patience required to work with children. Many general dentists or dental professionals who work exclusively with adults are used to treating patients quickly. They don’t necessarily understand how much extra time it can take to work with children.

If your child needs general dental care, an advanced procedure, or anything else, consider working with a children’s dentist. To set up an appointment with Nia Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, contact us today or request an appointment online. We look forward to working with your family.
