If you’re thinking about getting braces, you have a wide variety of options to choose from, including traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, and invisible braces like Invisalign. Adults are particularly attracted to invisible braces, but image-conscious teens and pre-teens prefer them as well. Learn more about this popular option and talk with an Invisalign orthodontist to see if they are right for you.
No matter how appealing Invisalign braces are, you can only get them if your orthodontist recommends them. The unique design means that they’re only appropriate for certain situations. In particular, you cannot use them to move teeth in vertical directions, and they work best with teeth that only need minor adjustments. If your teeth need a different type of adjustment, you may not be eligible for Invisalign.
Invisible braces are aligner trays made from plastic. They slip over the teeth, so you don’t see a lot of wires the way that you would with traditional braces. They’re very discreet, and most people won’t even know that you’re wearing them. This is especially nice for adults who don’t necessarily want everyone to know they have braces. You’ll still look great in all of your pictures.
One of the major differences between invisible braces and traditional braces is that you can easily remove the invisible braces. In fact, you’re supposed to remove them when you’re eating or when you want to clean them.
Keep in mind, however, that Invisalign braces need to stay in place for at least 20 to 22 hours each day. If you take them out frequently because you find them uncomfortable or if you forget to put them back in after eating, they won’t work as well. You have to be committed to wearing them as the orthodontist instructs.
When you have traditional braces, there are certain foods that you can’t eat, like popcorn, corn on the cob, or chewing gum. Your food choices aren’t limited with invisible braces, but you have to remove the braces while you’re eating. This works well if you’re the type of person who sits down and focuses on the meal, but if you prefer to graze all day, Invisalign braces probably aren’t right for you. It’s too hard to keep the braces in for the full 20 to 22 hours that you need.
Note that this rule also applies to all drinks except water. If you drink coffee or soda throughout the day, for instance, you run the risk of staining the aligners. You’ll have to change your habits or choose a different type of braces.
Invisible braces are an excellent choice for those who want to straighten their teeth without having a lot of wires in their mouths. However, they need to match your needs and your lifestyle. Make an appointment at Nia Pediatric Dentistry to fully discuss all of your options.
